I apologize for anyone who despises video math lessons, I really do. But this video from LearnZillion does a very nice job of explaining how we teach multiplication as equal groups! Please go to the link if you'd like to learn more :)
(We teach multiplication as "groups of ___" Ex: 3 x 4 is read as "3 groups of 4" and can be interpreted as 4+4+4 if a student is unsure of their multiplication fact.
