Reading- We are going full-steam in Reading! We have started a new Unit for whole group: Sports Stars. Let me tell you... this is a winner in the minds of third graders. I have a large group of kiddos who are suddenly much more enthusiastic about book talks! Also, we're still moving up in our small groups... keep reading at home to practice fluency and most importantly, practice talking about books. Your child should be able to summarize what they read using their "Five-Finger Retell." I'll post a picture of this onto the Reading page for you to see!
Writing- You've probably heard by now, but we are writing Fairy Tale Adaptations in Writing right now... how cool!!!! Your children are enjoying using their creative minds to make a change to a popular fairy tale (along with "domino changes" so their story fits together and makes sense) I can't wait to see the finished products :)
Math- We are continuing Unit 5, now working primarily on Two-Step Problems. Your child should be able to read a two-step word problem and write it as a two-step expression. For example:
Science- We are just starting Chapter 12: Forces and Motion for our Physical Science Unit. I will attach the newsletter to the Science page as well as send it out in an email. I will also post the Bill Nye video we watched to introduce our class to this new topic. We love Bill Nye!

- The Hillside bus had 14 passengers. When it stopped, 5 people got off and 8 people got on. How many people are riding the Hillside bus now?
- Expression: (14-5)+8 <-- this shows the first step in the parenthesis. Students should then ask themselves 'what do I need to do next?' to find the next part of the expression.
- Solution: 17 passengers <--Don't forget the label!
